Insurance Information in Zimbabwe

Insurance is a statutory requirement for all cars in Zimbabwe according to the Road Traffic Act. Before cars can travel, it has to have insurance, which should be kept in the car every time. You need to ensure that you have bought the right and legal insurance. There are 3 main types of car insurance you can get for your vehicle. Depending on your budget and preferences for insurance, you can choose from these three: Third Party Insurance, Third party fire and theft insurance and Full Coverage, also known as Comprehensive Insurance.

Third Party Insurance

This is the basic minimum insurance you can have for your vehicle in Zimbabwe. In Zimbabwe this is the basic coverage and it protects the policy holder/insured against loss or damage to the Third Party Properties in the course of driving, and death or bodily injury to the Third Parties. It also covers any legal liabilities arising from the policy holder’s driving which many have resulted in the above mentioned accidents to third parties. It however does not cover any loss or damage to the car owner. This coverage can be optionally increased subject to payment of additional premium upon request.

Third party fire and theft insurance

This type of insurance includes third party insurance as well as an extra for theft and fire. This means that it protects the policy holder/insured against loss or damage to the Third Party Properties in the course of driving, and death or bodily injury to the Third Parties. It also covers any legal liabilities arising from the policy holder’s driving which many have resulted in the above mentioned accidents to third parties. It however does not cover any loss or damage to the car owner. This coverage can be optionally increased subject to payment of additional premium upon request. This insurance policy only covers theft or fire damage to the policy owner’s car. It however does not cover damage to the policy owner’s car for any other reason than fire damage.

Fully Comprehensive

It is the most extensive and also complete form of motor insurance, which provides accidental damage to the policy holder’s vehicle and also includes the above two categories of coverage. It covers the following:
Motor own damage coverage – It covers the insured’s motor vehicle against accidental loss or damage up to the market value or the sum of the insured vehicle whichever will be lesser. It also covers theft, accidental loss, attempted theft, flooding, storm damage and collision. It doesn’t however pay for the following, self-inflicted damage, mechanical and electrical damage to the vehicle.

Passengers Liability

It covers against passenger liability for non- public service vehicles up to a certain limit. This coverage is for medical expenses and death benefit up to given limits. It is for public service vehicles (Buses, commuters and taxis) and is sold separately through passenger liability discs and they last for a period of a year.
You need to decide which type of insurance is suited for your needs as well as your budget, however, you need to ensure that you always have insurance that is both valid and legal.
Always drive with caution to avoid any accident. Drive safely!
