Top Holiday Destinations In Africa

Living in Africa may cause you to forget about its expansive landscapes and formidable animal life. That sense of detachment may lead you to ignore your native Africa as an excellent source of holiday destinations. The world’s second largest continent is arguably the best place for photographers, adventurers, and families alike. When you consider the sense that many of the holiday locations in Africa have been bypassed by the advance of time, you feel as if you are in a place that has remained the same for centuries, if not millennia. All of this allows Africa to offer you some of the most inspiring holiday destinations on the planet.

Today, let’s have a look at several of the top holiday destinations in Africa. We will offer you a short description of the attractions you will find at these destinations. Additionally, we will offer you a recommendation as to the best vehicle to have while you are there.

The Great Migration, Ngorongoro Reserve, Tanzania

The Great Migration, Ngorongoro Reserve, Tanzania

There are few words that describe the thunder of the hooves and the primeval feeling of seeing millions wildebeest and several hundred thousand zebra make their annual migration. The great migration begins in Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Reserve in January of each year, but takes the animals north through the Serengeti around June. The herds make their way through Kenya’s Masai Mara some time during September before they journey south again.

Every area the herds travel through is rough and hot. That is why we recommend an SUV for the trip. In particular, the Toyota Land Crusier Prado makes an excellent travel companion when following the migration. The Prado offers a strong engine, durable gearbox, tough axles, and all of the comforts you will need for the trip… especially ice-cold air conditioning.

Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town, South Africa

South Africa offers many great holiday destinations, but Cape Town may offer the most attractions in one convenient location. We captured the two main attractions in a single image above. Table Top Mountain offers stunning views of the surrounding area, romantic sunsets, and some of the best photo opportunities in the country. The cable car ride up and back offers an amazing view of the city and the surrounding beaches. The beaches themselves are amazing, clean, and rarely so crowded that couples and families cannot enjoy a wide variety of beach games and entertainment. Cape Town is truly a great holiday spot for romance or family fun.

Because Cape Town, and most of South Africa for that matter, offers an excellent highway system, you can take just about any vehicle. We would recommend the BMW 3-series sedan for its affordable luxury and comfort both of which become more important the farther you need to travel to get to Cape Town.

Victoria Falls on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe

Victoria Falls on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe

Victoria Falls has been termed one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. The falls are breath-taking, the image above does little justice to the raw natural force and energy you feel while close to them. The falls create part of the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, allowing you to approach them from either country. There are six gorges to visit, each offering spectacular vistas that are not available anywhere else in the world.

Victoria Falls is accessible by bus and train, with each leaving from local hotels on a regular basis. While inexpensive, each leaves you at the mercy of a set schedule. We recommend the Toyota Harrier as a means of freeing yourself from these constraining schedules and a comfortable way to reach the other tourist destinations that are close by.

Sossusvlei Dunes and Spitzkoppe, Namibia

Sossusvlei Dunes and Spitzkoppe, Namibia

If your holiday goal is to get away from the comforts of home, then the Sossusvlei Dunes and the Spitzkoppe in Namibia are for you. The name Sossusvlei means ”the gathering place of water.” That is a bit confusing since you will not find any water nearby. The dunes in the Sossusvlei are among the highest in the Namib Desert and offer great views. Many are over 200 meters tall, with the one named Big Daddy standing at about 325 meters. The dunes vary in color from pink to orange to red. Some of them overlook the Deadvlei, a ghostly expanse of dried white clay punctuated by the skeletons of ancient camelthorn trees.

The Spitzkoppe is often touted as a bushman’s paradise. The challenging terrain and rustic camping (read rustic as having absolutely no amenities) make this a destination for the more adventurous. The area offers excellent rock climbing, caves to explore, and there are safari trips available in the area. The rough terrain in both areas leads us to recommend a very well known bush companion, the Land Rover Range Rover. Granted, today’s Range Rover is much more comfortable than the old safari models, but one still offers the durable features and ground clearance that you need in this type of terrain.

Gorilla Safari in Rwanda and Uganda

Gorilla Safari in Rwanda and Uganda

As its natural habitat has shrunk, the gorilla has become an endangered species. Anyone can visit a zoo, to see a gorilla, but only the brave and adventurous venture out on a gorilla safari to see this powerful, majestic creature in its natural habitat. The best thing about a gorilla safari is that you do not have to set out on your own. There are many tour operators who have experience tracking these creatures as well has have organized treks that practically guarantee that you will see not only gorillas, but awe-inspiring rainforest views that will linger with you for the remainder of your life. Some of the tours will take you to Ib’iwachu Cultural Village, the Gisozi Genocide Memorial Site, Volcanoes National Park, and Bwindi National Park while tracking the gorillas; creating a very well-rounded holiday.

If there are organized tours, why are we recommending a vehicle? The roads into the base camps for the tours can be a bit rough and are not always paved. That makes the Nissan X-Trail the perfect ride to get you to where you will be meeting your guide.

There are many other holiday destinations in Africa that are just as intriguing as those we listed. Marrakech, Morocco and the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt come to mind. No matter the destination you have in mind, you need a reliable vehicle to get you there. BE FORWARD has thousands of cars in stock that can be readily exported to your location. You can view our entire inventory here. If you do not see the vehicle you are looking for, please send us an inquiry.
