EJ20 engine is part of the EJ engine series manufactured by Subaru. This kind of engine was introduced in 1988. EJ20 is a 2.0L 4-cylinder, petrol boxer engine that appeared first under the bonnet of Subaru Legacy. This version of the engine laid down the history of the EJ engine series while EJ20 replaced the old EA82 1.8L engine and became the main engine option for most of Subaru models for a long time.
The EJ20 engine has an aluminum cylinder block with dry cast-iron liners/sleeves put inside. The most common version of the naturally aspirated engine, the EJ20E, has aluminum alloy cylinder heads with a single overhead camshaft (SOHC). EJ20 cylinder head features 4 valves per cylinder and spark plugs located at the central, with the diameter of 36mm intake valves and 32mm of the exhaust valves.
EJ20 became a popular engine due to its turbocharged models. EJ20G turbocharged was the first engine to use oil nozzles, low compression pistons, a closed deck block, and two DOHC heads with two camshafts. This motor engine found on Subaru Legacy RS produced the power of 200HP at 6,000 rpm while its torque is 260 Nm at 3,600 rpm.
EJ20 engines come with Automatic and Manual transmission and some variants are equipped with 4-wheel drive options. In 1998, EJ20 twin-turbo received new heads and was renamed as EJ206, all were equipped with VF27 and VF25 turbochargers.
Despite their goodness, EJ Engines are not 100% perfect and they have some common problems such as:
- EJ20 knocking sound. Very often we can hear knocking noise in the fourth cylinder. It is the hottest cylinder and it is cooled worst of all, therefore the piston begins to knock there. At first, the engine knocks at cold start, and then all the time.
- High oil consumption. Don’t be surprised, this usually happens with turbo EJ20. The piston rings often fail. You need to change engine oil every after 7500 km and to use engine oil is what Subaru recommends.
For EJ20, turbocharged and even naturally aspirated engine oil is very important. You don’t want troubles with the engine and you are highly recommended to use high-quality original engine oil. If your place has trouble with qualitative gasoline, then use the best of what it provides. If you own one of naturally aspirated EJ20, you don’t need to worry – reliability and longevity of your engines are higher and can reach more than 250,000 km.
