Once it breaks down, sunlight oxidizes the surface of the plastic, causing it to turn dull, yellow, and hazy. This process is accelerated by contact with road debris, moisture, and chemicals, and even when you get your car washed.

How to Restore Foggy Headlights Step-by-Step

Tools required:

- Microfiber towels
- Painter’s tape
- Wet sandpaper (multiple grits)
- Spray bottle with water
- Headlight polish
- UV sealant or UV-protective coating

Steps:
- Clean the headlights with the towel, car soap, and water, then dry it completely. It’s important not to overlook this step as sanding a dirty lens can create deep scratches that are harder to remove later.
- Apply painter’s tape around the edges of the headlight where it meets the hood, bumper, and fender. Make sure that all nearby painted surfaces are covered before using sandpaper.
- Remove the oxidized surface layer by wet-sanding the lens. Use wet sandpaper beginning with a lower grit and progressing toward finer grits, taking care to sand evenly across the entire surface. Do Home Remedies Actually Work?
Home remedies such as toothpaste and baking soda can improve the appearance of foggy headlights, but their results are usually fleeting.
Both work because they contain mild abrasive particles that scrub away some of the oxidized material sitting on the lens surface. After polishing, headlights may look clearer and brighter, but just for a short time. Results don’t last as they do not restore the damaged UV-protective layer that originally shielded the plastic from sunlight. How Long Does Headlight Restoration Last?

Sanding and polishing remove oxidation and improve clarity, but they do not determine whether the results last for months or years. Once the damaged layer is removed, the lens becomes exposed unless a new protective coating is applied. That replacement UV sealant is what shields the plastic from sunlight and slows future oxidation.
