Exterior and Interior Comparison

Toyota Land Cruiser

The Toyota Land Cruiser is a Japanese multi-generational SUV that has been in production for decades and has had the largest impact on the popularity of 4x4s as we know them today.

In Tanzania, the Land Cruiser is wildly famous and is seen as the last but one SUV that is favored more for respect than its mud-plugging capabilities. Its closest competitor is the Nissan Patrol which is respectable in its own right and followed closely by the Land Rover Discovery.

(a) Cabin Storage

The Toyota Land Cruiser is a large car with the capacity to happily carry 8 people in a 3-row outline. The seats are made of respectable quality leather that is comfortable and soft to seat on. In the first row, the legroom is exceptional and the seats are electrically adjustable.

Similarly, on the second row, the seating space is countless. On the third row, the space is modest, not as good as the Land Rover Discovery, but close. The fact that it can seat 8 people is an enormous advantage only matched by the Nissan Patrol Y62.

Everything in the Toyota Land Cruiser V8 is well laid out and meticulous. From the first row to the third row, there are sufficient storage sections. These are useful for storing items such as beverages, smartphones, handbags, etc. For the 1st row, there are 4 bottle holders, dashboard storage, door panel storage, a cooler box, and a glovebox. For the second row, the storage is on the door side pockets and the front seat jacket pockets. For the third row, there are storage booths on either side.

(b) Cargo Space

In the 5 seater outline, the cargo space is big and can carry luggage for a large family with space to spare. The 3rd-row seats simply fold up at the pull of a lever. In the 8 seater outline, with the 3rd-row seats down the Land Cruiser still manages some decent cargo space. In the 2 seater outline with the 2nd and 3rd-row seats folded, the cargo space is enormous matching that of a full-sized van.

Range Rover

BROWSE LOW COST USED RANGE ROVER MODELS

The Range Rover Sport or RRS as it is sometimes mentioned is a performance attentive version of the Range Rover. It’s nimbler and smaller with great emphasis placed on-road and handling on performance while still retaining the old-style mud-plugging capabilities of the Land Rover stable. The second-generation Range Rover Sport that was introduced in 2013 upped on performance by engaging powerful engines, a 39 percent lighter body than the previous model, and a Dynamic Response suspension that flagged its position as one of the best performing SUVs.

There are several storage booths in the cabin that are useful for storing items such as smartphones, goggles, beverages, handbags, etc. In the first row, there is door panel storage, 4 cup-holders, the center box, and a glovebox. For the second row, there are 4 cup-holders, door pockets, and front-seat jacket pockets. For the third row, there are 2 cup-holders.

(b) Cargo Space

In the 7 seater arrangement, the boot is almost nonexistent. In the 5 seater arrangement, the boot is decent enough and can carry luggage for a family of 5. When more space is required, the second-row seats can be folded in a split outline to free up a sizable amount of cargo space.

Engine, Performance & Fuel Consumption

Toyota Land Cruiser

(a) Engine & Performance

BROWSE LOW COST USED TOYOTA LAND CRUISER MODELS

Under the bonnet, the Land Cruiser 2014 is powered by 2 engine options: a V8 4.7L petrol engine and a V8 Twin Turbo Diesel 4.5L engine. The Petrol engine produces 234 kW at 4800 rpm while the Diesel engine produces 200 kW at 3400 rpm. This is nowhere near the Range Rover make that throws out 375 kW at the top of the lineup but the Land Cruiser is still a very powerful and strong 4×4.

(b) Fuel Consumption

Toyota Land Cruiser’s fuel consumption is around 7.1 km/L to 9.7 km/L.

Range Rover

(a) Engine & Performance

Under the bonnet, the RRS or Range Rover Sports powered by 6 engine options: a 2.7L V6, 3.0L V6, 3.6L V8 diesel engine, and 4.2L Supercharged Jaguar AJ-V8, 4.4L Jaguar AJ-V8, 5.0L Jaguar-V8, and 5.0L Supercharged Jaguar AJ-V8 all of these are petrol engines. They are mated with 6 speed ZF- automatic, 6-speed ZF HP28 automatic, or 8 speed automatic. The Petrol engine of a 4.4L V8 produces 221 kW while the Diesel engine of 3.0L V6 produces 190 kW.

(b) Fuel Consumption

Range Rover Sports’ fuel consumption is approximately 10 km/L to 16.6 km/L for the Range Rover Sports powered by 2.7L V6 – 3.6L V8 diesel engine and for the Petrol engines fuel consumption range from 8 km/L – 11 km/L.

Final Verdict

From this comparison, we all agree that the Toyota Land Cruiser and the Range Rover Sports are both executive and premium SUV vehicles with adequate and advanced features. As we saw, these two cars have huge interior space for driver and passenger comfort, they offer adequate safety features for that safe ride and they are both great at highway cruising. If you are looking to import one of these two, we assure you that it will be money well spent. But if you need a car that is a more powerful 4×4 between these two, then you’ll have to go for the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series as the Range Rover Sports seems to be an executive car with more features with quick acceleration.
