The Mercedes-Benz CL-Class is a full-size luxury car, grand tourer, and personal luxury car coming in a 2-door coupe body style related to the Mercedes-Benz S- and CLS-Class. The production of the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class started in both Europe and the United States from 1992 to 2014 under Daimler-Benz (1992-1998), DaimlerChrysler(1998-2007), and Daimler AG (2007-2014). Mercedes-Benz CL-Class is the predecessor of the Mercedes-Benz SEC (C126)  and the Mercedes-Benz 280SE Coupe (W111) and the successor to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe (C217). This article concentrates on the evolution of the three generations of the CL-Class; C140, C215, C216.

 

The First Generation 

The first generation of the CL-Class started its production in 1992 for both US and Europe up to 1999 in Europe and 2000 in the US on the Mercedes-Benz W140 platform. Coming in two different engine options, the first generation of the CL-Class is available in either 4.2 – 5.0L V8 engine or a 6.0 – 7.3L V12 engine equipped by either 4- or 5-speed automatic transmission. 

The first generation comes in a range of models including the CL 420 available in a 4.2 L V8 engine, powered by a 275 hp and 400 N.m torque, the CL 500 available in a 5.0 L V8 engine, powered by a 322 hp and 470 N.m torque, the CL 600 available in a 6.0 L V12 engine, powered by a 402 hp and 570 N.m torque, the CL 600 AMG powered by a 439 hp and 623 N.m, the S/CL 70 AMG available in a 6.9 L V12 engine, powered by a 496 hp and a 720 N.m torque, the S/CL 72 AMG available in a 7.3 L V12 engine, powered by a 518 hp and a 740 N.m torque, and finally the S/CL 73 AMG available in a 7.3 L V12 engine, powered by a 524 hp and a 750 N.m torque. 

This is the classic generation of the CL-Class and this can be proven more by its body which is a sleek hard-lined coupe that slightly changed over the years. 

 

The Second Generation

The second generation of the CL-Class was in production between 2000 and 2006 under the platform of Mercedes-Benz W215 coming in a series of V8 and V12 engine options in either 5-  or 7-speed automatic transmission.

The second-generation models include the CL 500 available in a 5.0 L V8 engine, powered by a 302 hp and 460 N.m torque, the CL 600 available in a 5.8 L V12 engine, powered by a 362 hp and 530 N.m torque, the CL 600 available in a 5.5 L V12, powered by a 493 hp and 800 N.m torque, the CL 55 AMG  available in a 5.4 L V8 engine, powered by a 355 hp and 530 N.m torque, the CL55 AMG available in a 5.4 L V8 supercharged engine, powered by a 493 hp and 700 N.m torque, the CL 63 AMG available in a 6.3 L V12 engine, powered by a 437 and 620 N.m torque, and lastly, the CL65 AMG available in a 6.0 L V12 turbocharged engine, powered by a 603 hp and 1,000 N.m. 

The interior of this generation of Mercedes-Benz CL-Class is sophisticated, designed with standard features including an all-weather interior with designer wood trims, 14-way power front heated seats with memory, a power moonroof, climate control, trip computer, CD, a navigation system, an infrared-reflective glass, power-folding side mirrors, and a power door and trunk closing assist.

Mercedes-Benz equipped this class with technology features like the Active Body Control fully active suspension system, Bi-Xenon HID headlamps, COMAND system that integrates controls for the DVD-based navigation and audio system, dual-zone climate control and a multifunctional steering wheel that gives you ample control at your fingertips. 

 

The Third Generation

The third generation of the CL-Class was in production from 2006 to 2013 in Europe and 2007 to 2014 in the United States under the Mercedes-Benz W216 platform coming in a range of  V8 and V12 engine options with either 5- or 7-speed automatic transmission.

Like the previous generations, the third generation of Mercedes-Benz CL-Class is available in several models including the CL 550 and CL 550 4MATIC, both available in a 4.7 L V8 BiTurbo engine, powered by a 429 and 700 N.m, the CL 600 available in a 5.5 L V12 BiTurbo engine, powered by a 510 hp and 830 N.m, the CL 63 AMG available in a 5.5 L V8 BiTurbo engine, powered by a 536 hp, CL 63 AMG Performance Package available in 5.5 L V8 Biturbo engine, powered by a 563 hp and 900 N.m, and lastly, the CL 65 AMG available in a 6.0 L V12 BiTurbo engine powered by a 603 hp and 1,000 N.m torque. 

In 2011, Mercedes-Benz CL-Class received a facelift along with several exterior features including a new grille, bi-xenon headlights with LED technology, LED fog lamps, revised fenders, and hood, and new exhaust pipes.

Additionally, the CL-Class received ATTENTION ASSIST that visually and audibly alerts the driver if it detects signs of drowsiness, Night view PLUS with Pedestrian Detection, a rearview camera, PRE-SAFE system that detects vehicle instability, Adaptive braking, Nine airbags that offer 11-way protection, and an optional Active Blind Spot and Lane Keeping Assists. 

The interior of this generation just gets better in comparison to the previous generations coming with Active Ventilated front seats featuring 16-way power adjustment, a 15 speaker Harman/Kardon LOGIC7 sound system, the COMAND system with an 8’’ in-dash screen, and Enhanced Voice Control system that offers access to both entertainment and navigation and for unexpected amenities in the cabin, the KEYLESS-GO system that unlocks the car hands-free.
