The Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class is a 5-door subcompact luxury crossover SUV produced by the German automobile manufacturer Mercedes-Benz from December 2013 to present, coming in both front-engine, front-wheel-drive and front-engine, all-wheel-drive 4Matic layouts. The first concept model of the GLA was released in 2013 powered by a 2.0 L turbo petrol engine with 208 hp and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission followed by the GLA 45 AMG which is a higher performance concept model unveiled during the same year coming with an AMG 2.0 L four-cylinder twin-scroll turbocharged petrol engine, a 355 hp and an AMG Speedshift DCT 7-speed transmission and lastly the 2016 GLA 45 AMG concept model coming with a 2.0 L four-cylinder twin-scroll turbocharged petrol engine with 375 hp and an AMG Speedshift DCT 7-speed transmission. 

 

The First-Generation 

The Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class is produced in two-generation since its debut in 2013 where the first generation X156 GLA-Class comes in a design related to the A-Class (W176), the CLA-Class (C117), B-Class ( W246), and Infiniti QX30. The first generation comes with a variety of models which gives the Mercedes-Benz customers ample room to purchase the car fit for day to day and off-road usage. Powered by a 6-speed manual and 7-speed DCT automatic transmission, the first generation of the Mercedes-Benz comes in petrol engine models options including the GLA 180 and GLA 200 with a 1.6 L (1,595 ccs), the GLA 220 4MATIC, GLA 250 and GLA250 4MATIC, GLA 45 4MATIC AMG, and Mercedes-AMG GLA 45 4MATIC all coming in a 2.0 L (1,991 ccs) displacement. On the other hand, the first generation of the GLA  models come in diesel engines including the GLA 180 d equipped by a 1.5 L (1,461 ccs) and the GLA 200 d, GLA 200 d 4Matic, GLA 220 d, and the GLA 220 d 4Matic  powered by a 2.1 L (2,143 ccs) displacement. Over the years, the transmission of the GLA-Class has evolved from the 6-speed manual to the 7-speed 7G-DCT dual-clutch automatic for the petrol engine models while the diesel engines are limited to the 6-speed manual and 7-speed 7G-DCT dual-clutch automatic. 

 

The Second-Generation 

The second-generation H247 of the Mercedes-Benz GLA started its production in December 2019 produced with slight changes from the previous generation including a change in the chassis name to H-prefix, unlike the previous X-prefix. The body and chassis design for this generation are designed similar to the A-Class (W177, V177, Z177), CLA-Class (C118, X118), B-Class (W247), and GLB-Class (X247) coming in a powertrain of petrol and diesel engines along a 7-speed DCT automatic and 8-speed DCT automatic transmission. The second-generation slightly differs from the first generation as it comes with a coupe-esque styling which is slightly shorter in length, narrower, and higher with a wheelbase extension of 30 mm but offers more interior room. Just like the previous generation, this generation comes with petrol, diesel, and additionally Plug-In Hybrid Engines. The petrol engines can be found in the GLA 200 with 1.3 L and 1,332 ccs, the GLA 250 with 2.0 L and 1,991 ccs, the GLA 250 4MATIC, Mercedes-AMG GLA 35 4MATIC, Mercedes-AMG GLA 45 4MATIC+ and Mercedes-AMG GLA 45 S 4MATIC+ all coming with a 2.0 L engine and 1,991 ccs. On the other hand, the GLA models coming with diesel engine options include the GLA 180 d, GLA 200 d, GLA 200 d 4MATIC, and GLA 220 d 4MATIC coming with a 2.0 L capacity and 1,951 ccs. Mercedes is looking to release Plug-In Hybrid Engines models starting with the GLA 250 e with 1,332 ccs. These models of the latest Mercedes-Benz GLA class are set to be released in 2020. 

 

Safety and Security

For maximum safety and security, Mercedes-Benz made sure to equip the GLA-Class with essential protective features for both the driver and the passengers. The GLA-Class comes with 8 airbags, Daytime Running Lamps, Automatic light-sensing headlamps and front fog lamps with chrome rings for maximum visibility of the road, a rearview camera to assist the driver while parking or reversing, and adaptive braking technology with Predictive Brake Priming, Automatic Brake Drying, Hill Start Assist, and brake HOLD feature, an Active Brake Assist, a SmartKey remote locking, push-button KEYLESS START, power liftgate and for the sake of theft, the GLA-Class comes with an anti-theft alarm system with the remote panic feature. 

 

Comfort and Convenience 

Comfort has always been the key priority for Mercedes-Benz vehicles and it is not any different with the GLA-Class as it comes with 60/40-split-folding rear seats, power front seats with 3 positions memory and power lumbar support, and an adjustable cushion length. Mercedes-Benz gives the driver and passengers the freedom to access multimedia and directions through an 8-inch high-resolution central screen, a high-resolution color multifunction display in the instrument cluster, Bluetooth audio streaming, a hands-free Bluetooth interface, an in-dash CD player with MP3 capability, an HD  radio receiver and a pre-wiring for accessory Garmin MAP PILOT navigation system.
