The Probox in these countries can be used as a taxi shuttle, a family car with ample cargo room, or a shop or business van due to its large cargo area.
The interior of the Probox is very basic, there’s nothing fancy as it was built for commercial needs. The manually adjustable front seats are comfortable and have enough legroom even for tall occupants. The rear bench seat is very basic, not that supportive nor comfortable, but enough for short town trips. The seats and floor are covered with water-proof vinyl material that is easily washable.

In this series hybrid system, the engine functions as a generator whose function is to only charge the battery with no plug-in capability, while the electric motor is the sole provider of traction. The motor has an output power of 110 hp and 180 lb-ft torque. The system is paired with a single-speed transmission that is engaged by shifting a small mouse-like controller placed on the center console. This system has a fuel consumption of 37 km/l.

The Toyota Corolla Fielder is a wagon/van built by the Japanese company Toyota. In 2014, an eleventh generation of the Corolla E160 was released, and in 2017 it received a second facelift. Some of the changes on this facelift included a revised grille and front bumper, the introduction of an intelligent clearance sonar (parking brake assist), and Toyota’s “Toyota Safety Sense” as standard.
Like its Succeed and Probox siblings covered here, the 2017 Corolla Fielder is a versatile, reliable, and practical car with the capability of functioning as a family, shop or shuttling business car. But unlike its smaller siblings, the Corolla Fielder is spacious, with enough head- and legroom, and its seats, both front and rear are comfortable and supportive.
Under the hood, the 2017 Corolla Fielder came fitted with either a 1.5-liter (1NZ-FE) 4-cylinder petrol engine with 110 hp and 102 lb-ft of torque or a hybrid model that combines a 1.5-liter (1NZ-FXE) Atkinson cycle engine with a 60 hp electric motor with the combination producing 74 hp and 82 lb-ft of torque. There are two Drive modes: a hybrid mode whereby both the petrol and electric engines provide power at suitable times (the petrol engine goes off the car is on electric power) and a full EV Drive mode whereby only the electric engine is used. These engines are paired with a 5-speed manual/Super CVT-i and E-CVT transmission respectively and in a FWD or 4WD drivetrain.
2nd: Toyota Aqua Hybrid $2,910~
In 2017 the Aqua received its second facelift. Notable changes included a new front and rear bumper and Toyota’s “Toyota Safety Sense” package of advanced safety features became standard. Also apart from the common One, Two, Three, and Four trims, a new Aqua Crossover trim was introduced in 2017.
On the outside, the Aqua looks just like a regular top-hinged hatchback. The nose is rounded, while the tail is more conventional with high-mounted vertical taillights with a spoiler above them running from one end to the other.
The interior of the Aqua is simple. It features a multi-information display mounted at the top-center of the dash, with easy-to-use control buttons.
Under the hood, the Aqua comes with a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder with 73 hp paired with a 60 hp electric motor for a combined total output of 99 hp. The motor is powered by a 0.9-kWh lithium-ion battery pack that together with the car’s petrol tank is placed under the rear seat, leaving the cargo area undisturbed.
1st: Toyota Vitz $3,170~
In 2017, the Vitz received a second facelift on the third generation model that was released in 2011. While still retaining its best qualities, of being reasonably spacious, comfortable, and handsome, there were some notable changes as well that include a sportier front end inspired by the Vitz championship car, a new grille and headlights, and at the rear, the boot and taillights were overhauled as well. These changes gave the car a much more handsome look and is now available in five doors only.
The cabin was updated with some new materials, but design-wise it’s very similar to its predecessor. It’s well built, but it was let down by the ugly-looking materials and scratchy plastics.
The infotainment system features a seven-inch Toyota Touch 2 touchscreen display with no good visibility nor ease of use from the driver’s end. The extra features such as Wi-Fi and Google Street View are useful. The instrument cluster comes with a new good-looking 4.2-inch TFT display with plenty of useful driving information placed between the dials.
Under the hood, the 2017 Vitz came fitted with either a 1.0-liter (1KR-FE) 3-cylinder petrol, 1.3-liter (1NR-FE) 4-cylinder petrol, or a new 1.5-liter (1NZ-FE) 4-cylinder petrol. These engines are paired with either a 4-speed automatic, 5-speed manual or CVT transmission.
