The exterior of the 2016 Demio looks sharp, compact, and appealing. Its large grille, signature Demio eagle-eye headlights and LED running lights on top-spec cars boost its appeal.

Inside, the Demio is spacious with a high driving position and a large windscreen that provides good visibility of the road. The dash finishing is done in hard and sturdy plastic, but in general, the layout is well-lit and pleasant. The instrument cluster is attractively designed with instruments very clear and visible. The standard infotainment system is nice and can seamlessly connect to smartphones via Bluetooth. There is also a provision for two USB charge points.

Its 250-liter boot is so limited but can expand by folding the rear seats.

Under the hood, the 2016 Demio comes fitted with a 1.5-liter (F-P5) 4-cylinder petrol engine with 74 hp or 87 hp. This engine is paired with a 5-speed manual or automatic transmission.

The Honda Fit Hybrid is a subcompact hatchback produced by the Japanese company Honda since 2001. On the side, it shows an elevated rear part without the coupe-ish lines common on its competitors but rather an upright and conservative rear part, that is made better by the presence of a neat roof spoiler.

The interior of the Fit Hybrid is airy and incredibly spacious. There is enough space for all passengers regardless of their sizes, but the rear seats are the most spacious and are boosted by their two-step reclining function and the optional magic seat configuration.

The interior of the 2016 Probox is basic, as the car was built for commercial purposes. It features manual windows, manually adjustable front seats, and the seats, floor, and door panels are covered with washable water-proof vinyl or rubberized materials.

The front seats are comfortable and supportive, while the rear bench seat is only useful for short town trips. Front seat occupants have ample head- and legroom, while rear seat occupants might struggle for legroom, especially tall occupants.

4th: Toyota Corolla Axio from $2,880~

The Toyota Corolla is a series of compact cars produced by the Japanese company Toyota. With the release of the tenth generation of the Corolla (E140) in 2006, Toyota named the JDM sedan Corolla Axio. Fast forward to 2016 Toyota introduced the facelifted version of the eleventh generation Corolla Axio (E170). Exterior changes include a face with sleeker LED headlights with new DRLs, a slimmer upper grille with chrome trimming, and a full-width lower grille flanked by fog lamps. At the rear, the chrome strip on the boot lid is made slimmer and the taillights adopt new LED patterns.

The 2016 Toyota Corolla is a decent choice as a used car. It’s comfortable, fuel-efficient, and spacious. Like most Corolla’s the 2016 Axio has a good reliability rating.

All five passengers are treated with ample leg- and headroom, although tall passengers might find rear headroom limited. Its 368-liter boot is not very big, but it’s significant.

Under the hood, the 2016 Corolla Axio comes fitted with a 1.5-liter (1NZ-FE) 4-cylinder petrol engine with 109 hp and 105 lb-ft of torque. Optionally there is a 1.3-liter (1NRFE) 4-cylinder petrol engine with 101 hp and 97 lb-ft of torque. Other markets offered other engines ranging between 1.2 and 2.0 liters. These engines are paired with either 5- or 6-speed manual, 4-speed auto.

3rd: Toyota Aqua from $4,030~

The Toyota Aqua is a full hybrid electric hatchback produced by the Japanese company Toyota since 2011. It is available in One, Two, Three, and Four trim levels.

The 2016 Aqua is part of the first generation model that received its first facelift in 2014. The only notable changes on the 2016 model are the front and rear restyling the rest of the car remains largely unchanged.

The Toyota Aqua is a five-seat two-row car. Its front and rear seats are comfortable with plenty of head- and legroom for all occupants with the exception of very tall people.

Toyota’s Safety Sense (C) package is standard in the 2016 Aqua. It consists of three active safety and driver assistance systems: Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Vehicle and Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert (LDA), and Automatic High Beams (AHB).

Under the hood, the 2016 Aqua is powered by a hybrid system that combines a 1.5-liter (1NZ-1LM) 4-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor powered by a nickel-metal hydride battery pack. The system’s combined output is 99 hp. Power is transferred to the front wheels via either an automatic or continuously variable transmission (CVT).

2nd: Honda Fit from $5,760~

The Honda Fit is a subcompact hatchback produced by the Japanese company Honda since 2001. The Fit is a combination of practicality, reliability, efficiency, and affordability.

The 2016 Honda Fit is part of the third-generation model released in 2014. Nothing changed in 2016. Its exterior is curvy, stylish, and refined with a tall stance.

Inside, the Fit is spacious, this is in part possible due to the fuel tank being placed under the front seats which enabled the creation of an almost flat floor beneath the rear seats onto the cargo area. The seats are comfortable and supportive, they have enough leg- and headroom for even the tallest figures. Its large windows create a light and airy atmosphere, but also provide good visibility. The biggest catch is when you start fumbling with the highly configurable split-folding rear seats, branded “Magic Seats”. Folding them flat to the floor creates a 1500-liter boot that can accommodate a bicycle or a bookshelf.

The base LX Fit comes with a limited list of standard features that include, a 5.0-inch display, a CD player, a four-speaker audio system, a USB port, Bluetooth, and a rearview camera. Available features include a 7.0-inch touch-screen infotainment system, an upgraded audio system, navigation, satellite radio, HD Radio, and a power moonroof. The touch screen is easy to use and responds quickly to inputs, but its touch-sensitive (capacitive) slider for volume adjustment is awkward.

The 2016 Fit comes with either a 1.3-liter (L13B) petrol engine with 98 hp or a hybrid system that combines an Earth Dreams 1.5-liter (L15B/LEB-H1) Atkinson cycle petrol engine with 110 hp with an internal high-output motor (Intelligent Motor Assist) powered by an Intelligent Power Unit (IPU) with a lithium-ion battery. The engines are paired with either a 5- or 6-speed manual, CVT, and 7-speed DCT (on the hybrid).

1st: Toyota Vitz from $5,040~

The Toyota Vitz is a subcompact hatchback manufactured by the Japanese company Toyota since 1999. It is available in three trim levels: L, LE, and SE.

The third-generation Vitz was released in 2010, with its first facelift done in 2014. Nothing changed in 2016.

On the exterior, it looks tall and well proportioned, whether it’s in three- or five-door body styles. Its face features a large trapezoidal mesh grille that gave it a startling and bold front end. The rest of the car is simply a hatchback design.

Inside, the layout is practical and intuitive with lots of storage compartments, and the instrument cluster is placed on the driver’s side, unlike the centralized in 1st and 2nd generations. The dash is neat and the controls are simple to use and within reach.

Its front seats are comfortable and supportive, with ample leg- and headroom. At the rear it’s a different story, the seats are smaller and space is limited, especially for tall occupants. Due to this, the car becomes more desirable as a four-seater rather than a five.

Standard features in the base L trim include an Entune Audio system with a 6.1-inch touchscreen, HD Radio six speakers, a USB port, Bluetooth, an aux input, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, and a 60:40 split folding rear seat. Available features include a black front grille, projector headlights, LED daytime running lights, a rear spoiler, a leather-covered steering wheel and shift lever, sports seats, a sports instrument cluster, rear disc brakes, and 16-inch alloy wheels.

Under the hood, the 2016 Toyota Vitz comes fitted with either a 1.0-liter (1KR-FE) 3-cylinder petrol with 70 hp or a 1.3-liter (1NR-FE) 4-cylinder petrol with 100 hp. These engines are mated with either a 4-speed automatic, 5-speed manual, or CVT transmission.

These are 10 great cars, they are cheap but capable of performing most of the daily tasks required from a car. From this list, we can see that the majority of them are hatchbacks, this might be due to their affordable prices, cost of ownership, and their practicality, but also the presence of vans and a sedan cannot go unnoticed.

We at BE FORWARD have a stock of these cars and many others. Please check out our list to find your next car.
